Transhipping

Many of us would like to purchase fish from oversea, especially from tropical countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. However, we often wonder how do we receive our fish from thousand of miles away? What's involved in the transhipping process, who's involved and how it's done. Below are the process of how the sellers from other countries ship your beautiful fish to your door.

Overview

"Transhipping" is a mid-ground between fish sellers from Asia and buyers from U.S and Canada. In the United States, it is required one to have import license in order to receive fish from outside of the country. Even so, it is very expensive for a licensed person to receive a few fish in a shipment. In a transhipping process, the sellers group every individual's order into one large bulk order, and by doing so can minimize the shipping cost for each person. The transhippers, then use import license and drive to the airport, receive the bulk order, pay air cargos, inspection, clear with customs then take the order back to their inventory, ungroup the orders, checking DOA, and resend to the individual's locations.

What do I do once my fish arrived to the U.S?

You will need to pay the transhipper the transhipping fees + local shipping to your location. It is recommended you pay the transhippers ahead of time, before the shipment arrive to prevent any delays.
